About the Book
Real World Game Development in Flash represents an accumulation of close to ten years of knowledge and experience building Flash games in the interactive and advergaming industries. The notion to write a book came after meeting and working with Jason Fincanon, who had authored a book a year or so before. Over the period of a couple of months, I frequently bugged him with questions about the writing process, and he eventually asked if I would like to co-author a title (since his publisher had already started to question him about a new one). And so began a couple of whirlwind months in which we came up with an idea, I wrote up a proposal, and he encouraged me to take the reins on my own. The process of writing a technical “how-to” book is very daunting, particularly when you consider the number of people who may eventually read your words and accept them as fact.
I hope that my book finds many readers, and that each of them find something to take away from it that helps in either their day jobs or their hobbies. The Flash community has always been generous and over the years I’ve found many answers to my problems because other regular developers have been gracious enough to share their solutions and processes. I also hope that visitors to this site (whether or not they buy the book) will find something useful to take away, and feel encouraged to pass along their discoveries and tips as well.
This site is set up as a blog so that I can post updates and new features, as well as get feedback from my visitors. Every chapter in the book has a post associated with it, where you can download any file updates or post questions about the material. I’ll also periodically post interesting information I want to share about Flash and/or game development. If you’re visiting this site because you purchased my book, thank you very much. If you find it helpful to you, please spread the word to others who would like to try their hand at game development.
